Coach John Sothoron Memorial Scholarship
The Case for Endowed Scholarships
A LETTER FROM MARY SOTHORON AND HER FAMILY
Dearest Friends and Family,
On behalf of our entire family, we want to express our deepest gratitude for taking the time to honor the life of our beloved husband, father, coach, and friend, John Sothoron.
Your presence and support in remembering John speaks to the profound impact he had on countless lives, particularly through his unwavering dedication to nurturing young athletes over more than four decades as a lacrosse coach. John’s commitment extended far beyond the field; he was passionate about shaping not only exceptional players but also remarkable individuals who would carry the lessons they learned through college and life.
However, John faced a recurring challenge that many coaches know all too well: not every aspiring player could afford the tuition of an independent Catholic school. This is where his heart truly ached, knowing that financial barriers could stand in the way of a young person’s dreams.
St. Mary’s Ryken High School, where John devoted so much of his energy, operates solely on tuition and philanthropy, without designated funding from the government or archdiocese . The school allocates nearly $2.8 million annually in financial aid and merit-based scholarships, striving to make education accessible to as many students as possible.
To honor John's legacy, our family, alongside a dedicated group of supporters, has established the Coach John Sothoron Memorial Scholarship Endowment at St. Mary’s Ryken High School. We are thrilled to announce that $100,000 has already been pledged, and we invite you to help us raise an additional $100,000 by 2030 to fully fund this scholarship.
Once established, the Sothoron Memorial Scholarship will provide critical financial support to students who would otherwise be unable to afford the tuition. This will be the first scholarship of its kind at St. Mary’s Ryken, as it represents a unique opportunity to continue John’s work by removing financial barriers for college-bound student-leaders.
We invite you to join us in this groundbreaking effort, creating a lasting legacy that would both humble and uplift John. Together, we can honor a great coach and ensure that his spirit of generosity and commitment lives on in the futures of young leaders for generations to come.
Sincerely,
Mary Sothoron
