Inclement Weather Procedures

Inclement Weather Procedures

St. Mary's Ryken follows the direction of St. Mary’s County public schools for inclement-weather delays, early closures, or full-day closures. If St. Mary's County Public Schools are closed or operating on a delay, SMR will follow the same schedule.

For questions regarding your student's transportation needs, please contact Ms. Angie Swann at transportation@smrhs.org or 301-475-7661.

Notification of Closures or Delays

In all cases of closure or delay, SMR families will be informed by text and email. Please make sure all mobile numbers in your household are updated in your family profile in Veracross. If your mobile number is not correct in Veracross, you will not receive SMR text notifications!  If you need assistance, please contact Mrs. Betsy Haley at betsy.haley@smrhs.org or 301-475-7669.

We will make every effort to announce a delayed opening or closing by 6 a.m.

It is essential that families develop a plan for early dismissals/delayed openings and review it with their children.

If school is closed or there is an early dismissal, after-school activities both on and off campus (regardless of location) will be cancelled. If hazardous weather is predicted during the after-school hours, activities may be cancelled. This decision is typically made before the end of the school day, allowing students to take their regular transportation home.

Inclement Weather Procedures for Calvert, Charles, and Prince George’s Counties Provided by Dinks Bus Service

If you have questions about whether the Dinks bus will run, please contact the company at 301-399-8570 or dinkstransportation@gmail.com, or contact Ms. Angie Swann at angela.swann@smrhs.org

  • If SMR is closed, Dinks buses will not run.
  • If SMR is on a delayed schedule, Dinks buses will pick up students according to the delayed schedule.
  • If there is an early dismissal, Dinks buses will pick up students at the time of dismissal.

When SMR is open and Calvert, Charles, or Prince George’s County is delayed or closed: Dinks Bus Service follows the directions of the county of the student’s residence.

Example: If Charles County Public Schools are closed for weather, Dinks will not pick up students who reside in Charles County. If Charles County Public Schools are on a delay, Dinks buses will operate on that delayed schedule.

Example: If a student is usually picked up at 6:00 a.m. and there is a two-hour delay, the bus will arrive at 8:00 a.m.

If your student rides a bus that picks up in different counties (Bus 600, 602, or 604), you follow the directions of the county that has the delay or closure.

Example: If Prince George's County Public Schools are delayed for weather, Dinks will pick up ALL students on that bus, even those who reside in Charles County, two hours later. If Prince George's County Public Schools are closed and Charles County is on-time/delayed, Dinks buses will operate on the Charles County schedule, starting its route at the stop closest to the PG County line, in Charles County.  PG County families are welcomed to drive to a Charles County stop to ride the bus if student's would like to attend.

SMR students’ attendance will be excused based on their county’s status for the day.

Families should refer to their county’s public school website, Facebook page, or Instagram page to determine whether buses will be running.
