Summer Knights is celebrating its 9th summer season of providing athletic, academic and enrichment camps for students in grades 3-12. Learn more! Click on a topic below.

All of our camp staff, coaches and teachers are professionals in their fields. Summer Knights employs several college coaches and instructors, St. Mary’s Ryken staff members and leaders in the community to teach and manage our programs.
Camp Size: Academic classes have an average of 12:1 student to teacher ratio.
Students are welcome to register for two camps during the same week if one is offered in the morning and the other in the afternoon (or vice versa). A 30-minute lunch break will be provided in-between the camps.

ACADEMIC, ENRICHMENT AND ATHLETIC CAMPS FOR STUDENTS IN 3rd-12th GRADES

Athletic Camps

Game on! Summer Knights Athletic camps are coached by the best coaches and are sure to increase your young athlete’s skills and love of the game! Experience the Summer Knights difference though a number of different athletic camps. Hone your child’s current skill or try a new sport and discover passion for a new activity.

All camps are Monday – Thursday except for sailing.

Comprehensive Strength and Conditioning Camp

  • Mon-Thurs, offered first three weeks, for Ages 12-17. 8:00 - 11:00 a.m..
  • This camp is a comprehensive strength and conditioning program for athletes of any sport and at any level of competitions. Athletes will learn many areas of training from the basics to the expert level and cover subjects including nutrition and injury prevention. Some of the training will include: proper running form, core training, agility, speed, maximal strength, explosive power and overall conditioning. With all training there will be an emphasis on proper body movement and body positioning. Parents can expect their young athlete to work hard and be challenged in a positive uplifting environment. Athletes may sign up for a single week or the entire summer(4 weeks).

Boys Basketball

  • July 9-12. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. 5-9th grades. Fee: $200
  • July 16-19. 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. 5-9th grades. Fee: $200
  • Join us on the courts for one or two weeks of basketball camp with instruction provided from St. Mary’s Ryken Head Boys Basketball Coach, Walter Booth. This boy’s basketball camp will cover the basic fundamentals of basketball, including offensive play with and without the ball and on-ball and off-ball defense. Campers will have the opportunity to enhance their individual skills through specialized instruction. Campers will compete in various camp shooting and skills competitions. There will also be 1 on 1, 3 on 3, and 5 on 5 play. Campers should expect to leave this camp with an improved skill set, and enjoy a week of fun.

Girls Basketball

  • June 18-21 and June 25-28. 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. 1st-8th grades. Fee: $200
  • Taught by St. Mary’s Ryken Head Girls Basketball Coach Toyja Somerville, this girls basketball camp will introduce the game of basketball to young players. We will provide campers with the opportunity to develop their basketball skills while offering an atmosphere that fosters cooperative learning and enthusiasm. Campers will participate in teaching stations as well as play games and utilize learned skills.

Cheerleading

  • July 9-12. 8 a.m.- 11 a.m. 6-9th grades. Fee: $125
  • Summer Knights cheerleading camp teaches athletes all the essential skills to lead the crowd and support the home team. We ensure that each camper will learn proper hand and body movements, jumping techniques and proper stunting techniques.  Your camper will learn all of these and more at Summer Knights Cheerleading Camp.  Taught by Head Varsity Cheerleading Coach Erin Thompson along with SMR Knight's Varsity cheerleaders, this camp is designed to give your cheerleader an edge in the highly competitive world of cheerleading.

Field Hockey Camp

  • June 18-20 (Mon-Wed). 8 - 11 a.m. 7-12th grade. $135
  • Are you ready to take your game to the next level? Come learn from our collegiate coaching staff at the York Field Hockey Academy at St. Mary's Ryken. You can expect to learn more about the game you love with a fun and creative curriculum designed by Coach Katie Fost. Fost is currently the head coach at York College. Fost will be joined by Jessica Seay, the head field hockey coach at St. Mary's College of Maryland.

Football

  • June 18-21 and July 16-19.  9 a.m.- 3 p.m. 3rd-8th grades. Fee: $200
  • Join us to learn football fundamentals and techniques. Improve tackling, blocking, stances and all around knowledge of the game. Learn from St Mary Ryken Varsity staff and varsity student-athletes. Guest speakers during the week will share life lessons and assist in teaching football skills. Daily competitions will encourage the spirit of the sport! Players must bring non-perishable lunch. Teams looking for transportation should contact Coach Brady directly at aaron.brady@smrhs.org. This is a non-contact camp. Participants will be grouped by age and playing ability. Experienced and beginner players welcome to attend! You should bring cleats, sneakers, extra t-shirt, water bottle, snack and your own lunch.

New! Knight Fishing

  • July 16-19. 8 - 11 a.m. 5-9th grade. $100
  • Interested in fishing? Want to learn more about the local ecology and what lives beneath the surface of the Breton Bay? Come Knight Fishing with us! Come out and learn the in’s and outs of fishing in a safe monitored environment. As we move through different fishing techniques and skills, we will learn how to use them in to find out what lives beneath the surface! Come spend a week with us learning and loving the sport of fishing!

Boys Lacrosse Camp

  • June 25-28. 2-9th grades. 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. $150
  • Join St. Mary’s Ryken Head Boys Lacrosse Coach, Mr. Chris Perkinson for a week of intense lacrosse! Campers should bring their own gear including a lacrosse stick, pads, gloves, helmet and mouthguard.

Girls Lacrosse Camp

  • July 9-12. 6-9th grades. 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. $125
  • Join St. Mary's Ryken Head Girls Lacrosse Coach Jeff Worchester and the SMR Girls Lacrosse team for a fun-filled 4 days of lacrosse training! Campers will learn individual skills like cradling, shooting, and 1v1 offense and defense. Team concepts such as small sided situations, fast breaks, team defense and re-defending will also be covered.

Rugby

  • July 16-19. 8-11 a.m.. 5-9th grades. Fee: $80
  • Come learn the basics of rugby, the fastest growing sport in the world! This camp will be facilitated by St. Mary’s Ryken Teacher and Campus Minister, Greg DeStefano, and SMR alumnus, Lawrence Forte ‘12. This boy’s rugby camp (non-tackling) will cover the fundamentals of rugby, including basic rules, field positions, passing, catching and even some kicking! Campers will have the ability to learn about rugby, the father of American football, through both on and off-field instruction. Campers should expect to enjoy a week of fun with new friends, while learning about the great sport of rugby!

Sailing Camp

  • Beginning Sailing:July 9-13. Ages 11-15, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. $225 (June 18-22 Closed)
  • Intermediate Sailing: July 16-20. Ages 11-15, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. $225
  • These sailing camps are unlike any other camp! Spend part of your summer on the water, learn to sail and make new friends. This camp is led by St. Mary’s Ryken Sailing Coach, Joe Vavrus. Whether you’re a beginning sailor or an expert, this camp is for you. Campers will learn terminology, safety and basic sailing techniques. Intermediate campers will continue to build on sailing skills. Experienced sailors and those who completed beginning sailing are encouraged to sign up for intermediate sailing. Spend a week of your summer enjoying the beauty of the water. Space is limited.

Boys Soccer Camp

  • July 9-12 and July 16-19. 9:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. 3rd-12th grades. $150
  • Coached by St. Mary’s Ryken Head Boys Soccer Coach JJ Raley, this boy’s soccer camp will be skills based and emphasize specific soccer techniques each day. Dribbling, passing, shooting and defending and will be demonstrated, taught and practiced using skill specific drills. Small sided and large games will be played each day to apply these skills in a competitive atmosphere.

Tennis

  • June 18-21. 8:30 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. 5-9th grades. Fee: $120
  • Run by SMR Coach Joe Walker, tennis camp will focus on teaching basic and fundamental skills, techniques, and knowledge of tennis to beginners and enhance match skills/strategies and mental skills for more advanced players in a rigorous, education-based environment. Campers should bring their own racquet. Space is limited.

Volleyball

  • July 16-19. 2:30 - 5:30 p.m. 4-9th grades. Fee: $150
  • Bump! Set! Spike! Lead by St. Mary’s Ryken Head Volleyball Coach Delwin Harris, this beginning volleyball camp emphasizes learning the basic skills of volleyball and aims for beginner athletes to gain confidence while developing passing, setting, hitting and serving skills. Come learn new skills, improve your current game and make new friends!

Art Explorers

  • June 18-21. 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. 5-9th grade. $100
  • Art explorers is a four day art camp exploring different media and techniques each day. Camp goers will have a chance to work with a range of drawing materials and techniques, acrylic and watercolor painting, photography, printmaking, and collage. We will explore fun artist and compositions throughout art history while creating our own original masterpieces

New! Basic Woodworking and Shop Skills

  • July 16-19. 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. Fee: $100
  • Interested in learning basic woodworking and shop skills? Want to learn some interesting techniques to help around the house? Interested in some construction based learning and skill training every young person should know?  During this camp,  we will explore the skills needed to be successful and know how to fix basic necessities. Come spend the week learning the ins and outs of basic tools, drywall patching and other great skills every young person should know to be successful at home and in the community. Gain confidence and skills to get the job done!

New! Chivalrous Knights

  • June 25-28. 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Fee: $100
  • Interested in honing your Knightly and chilvarily skills? Then this camp is for you! Come spend a week developing skills for beard growing, handshaking, interviewing, steak-grilling and tie-tying fun! This camp will help our young male Knights develop the skills needed to make introductions and first impressions, while also gaining the skills that every young man should know.

Cooking 101

  • June 25-28.  12:30 - 3:30 p.m.  6-9th grade. Fee: $100, plus $25 for materials
  • Students will learn basic cooking techniques in the SMR kitchen. Making Salsa will teach how to chop an onion. Homemade Mac ‘n Cheese will teach us how to make a white sauce (roux). We will make pasta, eggs, salads, summer drinks and desserts. A guest chef will demonstrate cooking a great steak. Students are asked to contribute one family recipe. Students must wear closed-toed shoes and tie up long hair.

New! Gaming Through History

  • July 16-19. 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. 6-9th grades. $100
  • Have you ever wondered how society has reached points they are at today? Or why has one society succeeded while another has fallen? History is filled with common trends and strategies that can be found in games today. Engage yourself in a world of fun through popular board and electronic games that relate to historical trends and have brought civilizations to their points today.

New! Knight Fishing

  • July 9-12. 8 - 11 a.m. 5-9th grade. $100
  • Interested in fishing? Want to learn more about the local ecology and what lives beneath the surface of the Breton Bay? Come Knight Fishing with us! Come out and learn the in’s and outs of fishing in a safe monitored environment. New! Poetry

  • June 18-21. 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. 6-9th grades. $100.
  • Is your child a budding poet? This poetry camp will hone students’ creative writing skills. Campers will read, write, and discuss a variety of published poems. Formats such as elegy, ode, limerick, haiku, narrative, epic, sonnet, and free verse will be explored. We will venture outside daily (weather permitting) for inspiration as we then write our own original poems. All work will be compiled into a booklet for campers to take home with them.

Oil Painting

  • June 18-21. 12:30 - 3:30 p.m.  6 – 12th grades. $100, plus $10 materials fee
  • All experience levels are welcome. This camp offers students a chance to explore a media that is not often worked with until the college level. We will explore a new subject in oil painting everyday! We will be working on color theory projects, learning about oil painting through art history, and briefly covering how to paint figures and portraits. In addition to working in the studio, we will also be creating landscape paintings outside to capture the beautiful scenery surrounding the St. Mary’s Ryken campus. At the end of the week, family and friends are encouraged to join us for a fun exhibition highlighting the students artwork created throughout the week. The overall goal of this camp will be to have a great time and strengthen the student’s art skills and appreciation of artwork.

Photography

  • July 16-19. 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. 6-9th grade. Fee: $100
  • This course is designed to improve picture-taking skills by learning and doing. The emphasis is on techniques and composition. We will discuss and shoot landscapes, close-up flowers, portraits outside and in-studio, and pets. We will build a macro studio and set up an indoor portrait studio. Students will study light, perspectives, silhouettes, negative space and framing good pictures. Students will need a “point-and-shoot” camera with a cord to download on to a computer. Former students skills have improved quickly and dramatically during this camp. Excellent preparation for County Fair entries!

New! Programming Androids

  • June 18-21. 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. 6-9th grade. $100
  • Learn the fundamental elements of programming while creating your own games for Android devices. We will use MIT’s block-based programming environment, App Inventor, to create software that uses sensors built into modern mobile computing devices. App Inventor allows students to make their ideas real while reducing the barrier to entry for new programmers. It’s also a great introduction to the software platform used in our honors introduction to computer science class, giving future Knights a fun and friendly introduction to the first course in the SMR Computer Science Scholars Track.

New! “Practical Skills Middle Schoolers should Learn before High School”

  • July 16-19. 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. 6-9th grade. Fee: $100
  • This new course is designed to help students with personal and practical skills such as making friends, advocating for yourself, conflict resolution, doing laundry, filling a gas tank, planning an event and using bank cards. Class will include off-campus trips to accomplish these tasks. 

Academic Camps

The Summer Knights Academic Programs are designed with your child’s academic needs in mind! Give your child a jump-start this summer with several of our summer programs designed to boost your child’s confidence and skill level in and out of the classroom.

All camps are Monday – Thursday except for sailing.

ACT Prep

  • June 25-28. 3:30 - 4:15 p.m. Fee: $100. Cost includes textbook and materials
  • This add-on class prepares students to be successful on the ACT. Students enrolled in the SAT prep class and who are also planning on taking the ACT, should take this ACT specific prep course.

JumpStart Geometry

  • June 25-28. 8:30 - 10:00 a.m.   Fee: $100
  • This highly interactive class teaches students the basic concepts and skills needed to be successful in Geometry. Students taking this course are also encouraged to consider adding on the PSAT prep course.

PSAT Prep

  • June 25-28. 10:15 - 11:45 a.m. Fee: $100
  • In this PSAT prep class, students will learn skills necessary to be successful on the PSAT. Students will learn content-specific skills in addition to learning special test taking strategies. Students may take this course in combination with JumpStart Geometry or JumpStart Algebra II for a total fee of $150.

SAT Prep

  • June 25-28. 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. Fee: $295. Cost includes textbook and materials
  • This class prepares students to be successful on the SAT exam. There will be special attention to test taking strategies and content-specific skills. Students will:
    • Review key skills and concepts in the content area
    • Learn tried and true test taking strategies. These will be enforced in every session
    • Learn proven techniques and tips to help them manage their test day experience
    • Be assigned practice tests after each class to be completed independently at home
    • Need to bring an SAT/ACT approved calculator and note-taking materials.

Study Skills: Weekly Theme: Superheros

  • July 16-19. 12:30 p.m.- 3:30 p.m. 6-9th grades. Fee: $100
  • Improve your organizational and study skills through a fun experience at St. Mary’s Ryken. Students can improve their study skills through an immersive experience learning about comic book superheroes. However, the first step towards successful study habits is organization. While immersing themselves in various study skills, students will be taught how to properly organize assignments, papers, notes, and ideas in order to improve their retention of knowledge.

Option 2: Register online and pay the full amount with a credit card. No deposit required.

The last day to withdraw from any programs is May 30, 2018. After this date, refunds will not be issued. A $75.00 withdrawal fee will be deducted from all refunds requested prior to May 30, 2018. If Summer Knights cancels a program due to low enrollment, a full refund will be issued. Refund requests must be submitted in writing or via email to: skdirector@smrhs.org. No exceptions will be made to this policy.
