St. Mary’s Ryken offers a 5-day summer program called the Freshman Experience that helps your student to acclimate to our school’s academics and culture. This two-part day program, was designed to help incoming freshmen get an academic and social boost for the start of the school year. Developed and taught by our most seasoned educators, Jump Start and Freshman Seminar are highly effective in preparing rising freshmen for their first year at SMR.

Students will gain:

  • Organizational techniques - learn study skills and other success strategies
  • Academic boost - get a jump start in English, math, science and theology classes
  • Confidence - explore the campus and meet teachers and other students before start of the school year

The Freshman Experience 2017: Jump Start Series and Freshman Seminar

The Jump Start Series introduces new skills and concepts to students in order to be better prepared when they enter the SMR classroom in the fall. These classes are content specific and support academic growth and enrichment.

The Freshman Seminar introduces high school success skills to students of all academic levels.

Topics include:

  • time management
  • note-taking skills and testing strategies
  • homework tips
  • stress management and navigating the social pressures that come with high school
  • communication skills for interaction with peers and teachers

Program Details:

  1. The day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m.
  2. Half-day options are available.
  3. Lunch is included in the cost of the program.

Program Fee:

$250 - includes two academic Jump Start classes each morning, Freshman Seminar, lunch and program materials.

Transportation:

Transportation from Calvert, Charles and Prince Georges counties is available for $135 for the week.

Registration Process:

  1. Choose your week, then choose your classes.
  2. Choose your week: July 10-14 or July 24-28. (Students may take both weeks if they choose.)
  3. Choose your classes: Choose 2 classes from the list below and we will craft a morning schedule for your child. *All students will take the Freshman Seminar in the afternoon.
    • Jump Start Math (based on your child’s math placement)
    • Jump Start Science (based on your child’s science placement)
    • Jump Start English
    • Jump Start Theology
