The SMR dress code provides a standard for our students conducive to learning and respectful behavior. The SMR dress code balances the need for self-expression and promotes a positive attitude. The school uniform is a point of pride and must always be worn appropriately during the entire school day while on campus. 

The Form Uniform is worn during the 2nd and 3rd Quarters of the School Year. 

The Formal Uniform is required on all-school Mass days, even when we have a mass scheduled during Casual Uniform.  


Important Uniform Update: 

(*uniform warnings and reminders will NOT be given, as the following is the daily expectation)

Only SMR-branded gear is permitted over the standard school uniform shirt, but under the blazer during the school day.

Gear worn over the school uniform during the day must feature the St. Mary’s Ryken name and be in official school colors—white, gray, navy blue, or forest green.

Clothing with other logos, labels, or non-SMR branding is not permitted.


Daily Formal Uniform Requirements:

Student ID

  • SMR Lanyard or Badge Clip with SMR ID must be on your person from the waist up and visible at ALL times during the school day.

Blazer

  • Navy blue with SMR seal purchased from Flynn O’Hara. 
    • Blazers should be worn at all times during the school day, unless given permission to temporarily remove during class. 
  • For warmth, students can wear the following under their blazer:
    • Navy blue SMR logo quarter-zip purchased from SMR campus store
    • Navy blue, gray, forest green, or white SMR athletic quarter-zip.
    • Navy blue SMR logo sweater purchased from SMR campus store
    • SMR crewneck sweatshirt. (should not be oversized) 
    • HOODIES CANNOT BE WORN UNDER THE BLAZER

Shirt

  • Blue or White (short or long sleeve) Oxford Shirt with SMR logo purchased from Flynn O’Hara 
  • Students are permitted to wear non-visible T-shirts under the long sleeve Oxford for warmth
    • There should be no visible logos
  • Shirts must be tucked in. 
  • Shirts for young men should be buttoned all the way and your tie tied correctly. Click here for an instructional video on how to tie a tie.

Tie

  • SMR Knight tie purchased from SMR campus store
    • ONLY Seniors can wear tie or bowtie of their choice (must be school-appropriate)

Pants

  • Light Khaki Pants with SMR emblem purchased from Flynn O’Hara
  • Straight leg pants only.  No form-fitting or jogger-like khakis are permitted.

Kilt/Skort

  • Light Khaki kilt/skort (*skirt) with SMR emblem purchased from Flynn O’Hara 
    • Skirts must be between fingertip length & the knee (mid-thigh)
    • Pants can be worn in place of the skirt for personal preference OR if shirt length is an issue.

*SMR Administration reserves the right to alert when pants must replace skirts due to a uniform violation.*

Shoes

  • Solid tan deck or oxford style shoes only during formal uniform
    • For a list of approved styles, click here 
    • Approved shoes for those who need Orthopedic accommodations:
    • Boots, sandals, or open-toe shoes are NOT permitted.
    • Uggs, Crocs, Sanuks, Hey Dudes (or any other type of cloth shoe), slipper-style shoes, moccasins, cowboy boots, and combat boots are also NOT permitted
    • Rain boots are permitted on any rainy day.
    • Winter/snow boots are only permitted when a formal SMR announcement is sent via school email and school text.
    • Shoes must have a full back for safety purposes.

 

Socks

  • Navy blue, white, or black crew socks

Belt

  • Brown or black dress belt (solid weave, khaki-canvas or leather). Students are required to wear a belt when wearing pants. 

Cold Weather Indoor 

  • If a student is cold during the school day, he\she can wear their SMR-branded gear over the standard school uniform oxford, but under the blazer. 
  • Clothing with other logos, labels, or non-SMR branding is not permitted.
  • No items should be oversized.
  • Hoodies can only be worn with the casual uniform.
  • Nothing with a hood should be worn under or over the blazer, crew neck, or quarter-zip.
  • The following items may NOT be worn at any time during the school day: 
    • non-uniform sweaters
    • sweat pants
    • yoga pants
    • pajama pants
    • any other non-compliant clothing.
  • Ball caps, skull caps, beanies, hoods, or any other type of headgear is not permitted to be worn during the school day. 

Cold Weather Outdoor: 

We are blessed with a beautiful walking campus. It is essential that during the winter months, students plan to dress appropriately for the weather while still wearing their uniform.

  • Female students wearing the skort/kilt can wear solid color navy blue or black leggings or tights under their skirt for warmth during the winter.
  • Pants are preferred for ladies in the winter. 
  • NO SWEATPANTS OR PAJAMA PANTS can be worn under a skirt AT ANY TIME ON CAMPUS.
  • Students should wear winter coats/hats when transitioning between buildings but these items must come off once in the classroom.

*All Cold Weather Indoor expectations are to be followed with the Cold Weather Outdoor as well*


Additionally, students are expected to adhere to the grooming guidelines outlined below, taking pride in upholding the SMR Uniform Policy.

Jewelry

  • Students are allowed to wear one necklace. 
  • Students are not permitted to have facial piercings of any kind. 
  • All jewelry should be modest in size and shape. 
  • Gauges or any other body-piercing jewelry are not to be worn in school. 

Cosmetics

  • Lightly applied cosmetics can be worn during the school day. 

Hair

  • Students are expected to be well-groomed.
  • Hair must be neatly kept and of natural color. Unnatural red shades are not permitted.  
  • Extreme variations in length, designs, and color or shaved areas of hair are not permitted. 
  • Scarves or other hair accessories/coverings should not be worn during the school day. 
  • Young Men: Any facial hair must be groomed and well-kept. SMR administration will ask a student to shave if facial hair is not neat and groomed. 

SMR reserves the right to alter parts of our policy as needed.

Updates will be communicated to families and ample time will be provided to adjust to any updates. 

Violation of Dress Code:

Uniform infractions will result in the use of the St. Mary’s Ryken Code of Student Conduct Levels of Response for disciplinary action and automated notices or personal emails will be sent when in violation.  If violations continue, levels of response will become more severe.
