In compliance with National, local, and WCAC regulations, St. Mary's Ryken follows the below environmental policies:

St. Mary's Ryken Environmental Policy

Heat Exposure

4 distinct zones based on Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) and Heat Index (*"Real Feel" Temperature), each with specific safety protocols for both contact and non-contact sports:

  • Below 95 Degrees ("Real Feel" Temperature)
  • Between 95-99 Degrees ("Real Feel" Temperature)
  • Between 100-104 Degrees ("Real Feel" Temperature)
  • Above 105 Degrees ("Real Feel" Temperature)

* "Real Feel" Temperature is defined by the actual temperature combined with humidity (Heat Index or the WBGT)

Cold Exposure

4 distinct zones based on **"Real Feel" Temperature, each with specific safety protocols for all sports:

  • Above 32 Degrees ("Real Feel" Temperature)
  • Between 32-25 Degrees ("Real Feel" Temperature)
  • Between 24-16 Degrees ("Real Feel" Temperature)
  • Below 15 Degrees ("Real Feel" Temperature)

** "Real Feel" Temperature is defined by the exact outdoor temperature including wind chill and/or precipitation

Both Heat and Cold Exposure temperatures will be measured by St. Mary's Ryken Athletic Trainers with a Kestrel 5400 Heat Stress Tracker.

Lightning Protocol

In the event of lightning occurring during Athletic events, all outdoor activity will be halted and everyone must seek shelter in accordance with St. Mary's Ryken Emergency Action Plan.  The decision to seek shelter is based on distance of the nearest lightning strike:

  • Beyond 15 mile radius from St. Mary's Ryken - cleared for outdoor activity
  • Within 15 mile radius from St. Mary's Ryken - begin safety procedures
  • Within 10 mile radius from St. Mary's Ryken - fields must be cleared and everyone must seek shelter

There will be a 30 minute delay with each lightning strike until lightning has moved outside the 10 mile radius. Lightning strikes will be monitored using the Weather Bug app.
