Dear SMR Community,
I am humbled and blessed to continue serving the St. Mary’s Ryken community in my new role as President. Being part of the administration at SMR for over 20 years, I have always regarded this vocation as a servant-leader to our students, faculty, staff and alumni. I have a personal passion and love for our mission as a Catholic, college preparatory school that values the formation of each student in the likeness of Christ.
As President of St. Mary’s Ryken, I will focus on three areas that are important to our school: Mission. Vision. Resources. The mission of our school is the catalyst for all academic and extracurricular programming, budgetary decisions and how students see their relationship with each other and our adult community. Supporting and illustrating how the mission is lived out at St. Mary’s Ryken is an important part of my goals. In 2018, the SMR Board of Directors created a strategic vision for SMR. Ensuring this strategic plan and vision is accomplished in a mission-centered and purposeful manner will be an emphasis in this next year. Finally, working with our Board, alumni, corporations, donors and the larger community to provide the needed resources to fulfill our mission and needs of the school will be a large piece of my work this year and in future years.
It is a great day to be a KNIGHT! The Donnie Williams Center, a 48,000 square foot multi-purpose space focused on health and wellness, will be open in time for the new school year. It will house new courts for volleyball and basketball, 1,200 seat bleachers, training room, cardio room, wrestling room, weight room and athletic offices. There are outdoor patios and a concession stand to enjoy each season. Also, this summer our MIL STEM Wing will open which will house the Innovation Lab and new computer classroom space for all students to utilize. It will include a state-of-the-art robotics arena and build space for our Project Lead the Way Aerospace Engineering and PLTW Computer Science curriculum.
There isn’t a more exciting time in the history of St. Mary’s Ryken to be a part of this community. I am privileged to lead our school in making a difference in the lives of our students, alumni and our dedicated faculty and staff. I am motivated to continue living the mission that inspires and transforms our young adults, who are all children of God.
In your service,
Dr. Rick Wood
