St. Mary’s Ryken Students Bring Creativity and Compassion to the Community

In recognition of National Parkinson’s Awareness Month, St. Mary’s Ryken visual art students recently partnered with MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital for the inaugural “Art in Motion” event, an inspiring initiative designed to bring joy and creative expression to individuals living with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers.

Held on April 17, 2026, at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, the event welcomed approximately 20–25 participants for a guided, hands-on art experience. Each participant received a canvas and paints to create their own unique artwork, guided by local artist Adrianna Reloba of Freedom Palette—whose work focuses on building community through accessible, meaningful art experiences. The event was made possible through a partnership with the St. Mary’s County Arts Council, which sponsored the artist’s services.

SMR visual art students played a vital role throughout the event, assisting with setup, supporting participants, and facilitating the creative process. Their presence created a welcoming and encouraging environment for all involved.

“This experience offered our students a powerful reminder that art extends far beyond the classroom,” said Ms. Clara Hayward, SMR Visual Arts teacher. “They saw firsthand how creativity can uplift others and foster meaningful connections.”

“Art in Motion” exemplifies St. Mary’s Ryken's mission of developing students who lead with compassion and service—while highlighting the meaningful role young artists can play in strengthening their community.
