District Veteran of Foreign Wars Group Honors Two SMR Community Members

History teacher, Mr. Leif Liberg and 11th grade US History student Luke Seep were recognized on Sunday, January 12 for their award-winning entries in the Veteran of Foreign War’s annual Teacher of the Year and Voice of Democracy competitions.

Mr. Liberg and Luke were SMR’s entries into this competition and were selected from among other high school teachers and students in St. Mary’s County to represent Post 2632 (California, MD) at the District level competition.  Of the District level competition, Mr. Liberg was awarded 1st place among all Southern Maryland’s teacher winners and he will represent the District at the state level. The winner of the VFW’s State Teacher of the Year award will be named at the end of the January. 

Luke, the son of Daniel and Esther Seep of Leonardtown, was awarded 2nd place among the District’s 6 winners high school winners.   Luke’s speech on the theme “What Makes America Great” wowed the Post 2632 judges who said, “Competition was especially keen this year and the panel found both Mr. Liberg and Mr. Seep’s packages to be head and shoulders above the rest.”  Of Liberg and Seep, Post 2632 leaders concluded, “You are both outstanding Americans, and an example to our community.”
