Congratulations to 2022 Winter Student-Athletes and Coaches

 

On Thursday, March 3, St. Mary's Ryken Winter student-athletes and their coaches were honored for their academic and athletic achievements during the sports awards ceremony. Please join us in congratulating the following teams, athletes and their coaches:

Boys Basketball 

• Opened the regular season playing in Capitol One Arena in Washington D.C. 

• Won the Potomac School Kickoff Tournament 

• Huge regular season win vs St. John’s College High School coming back from being down 16 at the half.

Boys & Girls Swimming 

•  4 team records were set this year:

  • Junior Samantha Pennell set the 100 Breaststroke record with a time of 1:20.24 against Holy Cross. 

  • Freshman Jameson Smith took the 100 Backstroke record with a time of 1:06.32 at the WMPSSDL Championships.

  • In the final Dual meet of the year, Jameson Smith, Joshua Magno (freshman), Jay Pawloski (freshman) and Zachary Maldonado (junior) established a new 400 Free Relay Record of 3:59.39

  • Finally the the girls broke a 2014 record in the 200 Free Relay. Swimmers Joni Gordon (Sophomore), Samantha Pennell (Junior), Isabella Longmore (Sophomore) and Mallory Thompson (Sophomore) set the new mark at 1:50.79.

• SMR scored the most points since 2013 at the WMPSSDL championship, returning 12 swimmers to compete in finals.  

• The team GPA was an impressive 4.01!

Cheerleading

• Large number of athletes serve as leaders with in service clubs 
• Mentoring and encouragement of younger athletes through coaching and organizing performances with local youth
• Dedication to furthering and improving skills through attending extra specialty classes. 
• Successfully hosted the Cheer and Dance Competition for Southern Maryland Youth Athletic Conference
• Team GPA of 3.91!

Co-Ed/Boys Ice Hockey

• The main team accomplishment was coming together as a team with many first-year skaters, committing to compete in the WCAC and MAPHL.  Hard work off the ice prepared them in their attempt to meet this monumental challenge head-on.
• During the February 10 game against St. Paul VI Catholic High School, the team started to believe that it could win and held the lead for the majority of the game. The determination, comradery, and compete level was great to see. This was a game when the team had three three separate goal scorers!

Girls Basketball

• Opened the regular season with a win vs Concordia Prep at Capitol One Arena in Washington D.C. 

• Advanced to the WCAC Quarterfinals 

• Team GPA of 3.54

Girls Ice Hockey 

• 3rd season as a program, 2nd season in the Mid-Atlantic Girls Hockey League and WCAC

• Team advanced to the WCAC Finals for the first time in program history

• Won the Mid-Atlantic Girls Hockey League Blue Division Championship (back-to-back champs) 

• Team GPA is 3.81

Wrestling 

• Finished #5 in the Nation (4 All-Americans)

• 2nd Place Maryland States (2 state champions) 

• Back to Back WCAC Champions (by 100 points), 

• 3rd Place National Division Virginia Duals, 1st Place East Coast Catholic Championships

• 22-1 Dual Meet Record

• WCAC Champions (Wrestling) - Evan Boblits at 113, Mason Buckler at 160, Will Buckler at 152, Clayton Gabrielson at 138, Ezekiel Gayle at 195, Brandon Jefferson at 170, TJ McCauley Heavy Weight, Mehki Neal at 145, Austin Wood at 106 and Tyler Wood at 120

• Most Outstanding Wrestler of the WCAC Tournament - Clayton Gabrielson 

• State Champions - Mason Buckler at 160

• All-Americans - TJ McCauley at Heavyweight, Mehki Neal state champion and all american at 145, Clayton Gabrielson at 138 and Evan Boblits at 113

• Most Promising Award: The St. Mary’s Ryken Most Promising Award is chosen by either the coach or by team vote. The Most Promising Award goes to an underclassman who exhibits strong fundamentals and a good understanding of the game. These student-athletes have the potential to lead their respective programs to future triumph.

• Ryken Award: The St. Mary’s Ryken Mission: a Catholic, coeducational, college preparatory school community, operated under the Xaverian Brothers’ sponsorship, dedicated to academic excellence and individualized student growth. • Most Valuable Player Award: The St. Mary’s Ryken Most Valuable Player Award goes to the most valuable player of the season. This award was either chosen by the coach or the team. The MVP award is an award representing respect. This award is given to those athletes who best performed in their respective venues for the good of the team.
