AP Latin Students Attend Largest Gathering of Latin Speakers in the World

The AP Latin class requires students to analyze texts in order to write essays with textual support. Living Latin in New York City, the largest annual gathering of Latin speakers in the world, offered our students the opportunity to examine and discuss, with experts in their fields, Latin authors from ancient, medieval, and Renaissance times, such as: Livy, Descartes, Augustine, Hildegard, Erasmus, and many others.

Our SMR students had already read many of the authors, and discussing familiar themes gave our students an opportunity to share their thoughts with other students during the conference.

"My students most enjoyed the challenge of listening to professors speaking in Latin, and responding to their questions," said SMR Latin teacher Mrs. Sam Spaulding.  "They told me it was a bit intimidating, but they all rose to the challenge, reading successfully and responding in Latin."

230 people attended the conference.  Most were teachers or college professors, and about 30 were high school students.

"Traveling to New York City with my Latin class has been one of the most fun things I have done as a SMR Student," said senior Bryan Jones. "Not only was I able to learn more about the Latin language but I was also able to see the city of New York."
