Congrats to SMR Signed Student-Athletes
In a presentation ceremony in April, seven St. Mary's Ryken student-athletes signed national letters of intent for the college they plan to attend in the fall.
Congratulations to Jake Kost, Matthew Sharkey, Alperen Kurnaz, Tanasia Miles, Michael McIntosh and D'Angelo Tull!
Jake Kost has been a member of the varsity baseball team for 2 years including his senior season. Last season he earned the Coach's Award. He has been on the President's List Honor Roll all 15 possible quarters at SMR.
Jake signed a letter of intent with Mt. Aloysius College, a NCAA Division III institution in Cresson, PA and a member of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. US News and World Reports ranks Mt. Aloysius as one of the top comprehensive colleges in the Northern United States.
Matthew Sharkey has been a member of the varsity lacrosse team for three seasons. He has been on the Principal's List Honor roll 12 quarters and the President's list for three quarters.
Matthew signed a letter of intent with Salisbury University, a NCAA Division III school in Salisbury and a member of the Capital Athletic Conference. The Seagulls have won 12 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse National Championships including the past two.
Also a player on the boys Lacrosse team for three seasons is Tyler Wright. He has been on the Principals honor roll nine times and Presidents Honor roll twice since coming to SMR as a sophomore. He was 1st team all County in wrestling his senior year and Honorable mention All WCAC.
Ty has signed a national letter of intent with Limestone College, a NCAA Division II School in Gaffney, South Carolina and a member of Conference Carolinas. The Saints won the NCAA D-II Men's Lacrosse title 5 times including last season with an 11-9 win over Merrimack.
Alperen Kurnaz is from Istanbul, Turkey and came to SMR's basketball program for his senior year. He has been on the President's List Honor Roll all three quarters at SMR. He made the Honorable Mention all-WCAC and Honorable Mention All-County team this season.
He has signed a national letter of intent with the University of Denver, a NCAA D-I institution in Colorado and a member of the Summit League. The Pioneers were 15-15 this season and 10-8 in league play. The University of Denver has won 33 NCAA Championships in its history and won the Learfield Cup 9 of the past 10 seasons emblematic of the top non-football NCAA Division I athletic department in the nation.
Tanasia Miles came to SMR as a senior and made the Principal's list honor roll twice this year. In her junior year, she suffered a torn ACL and spent much of this season getting back to full strength.
She has signed a national letter of intent with Wilmington University, a NCAA Division II school in Delaware and a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.
From the football team, Michael McIntosh has been a member of the varsity football team for three seasons and lettered four times in wrestling. As a sophomore he won the Coach's award for Wrestling and was 3rd team All-WCAC and 1st team All County in wrestling. His junior year he was first team all county as an offensive lineman and Honorable Mention as a wrestler. His senior year he was the coaches award winner for football, Honorable Mention All-County as defensive lineman and First Team all-County as a wrestler with a 32-9 record. He has made the Principal's List honor roll for 12 quarters.
He has signed with Randolph Macon University, a NCAA Division III school in Ashland, Virginia. The Yellow Jackets are members of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. This past season the Yellow Jackets went 7-3. In 2016 they won the conference and advanced to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Also from the football team is D'Angelo Tull who has lettered three times in varsity basketball and as a senior in Football. As a freshman, he won the Coach's Award in basketball. As a sophomore he was Honorable Mention all WCAC and 1st team all-county in basketball. His senior year he was Honorable Mention all WCAC in basketball and Honorable mention all-County in football and basketball.
He has signed with Salisbury University, a NCAA Division III school in Salisbury and a member of the Capital Athletic Conference. Last season the Seagulls were 7-4 and played in the Scotty Whitelaw Bowl. They have played in a bowl game or the NCAA Playoffs every year since 2014.
