College Prep Ancient and Medieval
History Requirements

Course Description: This course is an in-depth study of the history
of the human record from ancient through the medieval period. The student will
explore the rich tapestry of man's inventiveness through his art, literature,
and technological advances, as well as his economic and political institutions
and military achievements. The student will gain a greater understanding of how
history is studied and how society developed and interacted up to 1450. Students
will practice writing and research skills and read and interpret historical and
literary sources.
Materials required: Text: Beck, World History: Patterns of
Interaction
(This book will be used for both Ancient/Medieval course
and the Modern World history course in the sophomore year.)

Two sturdy folders with pockets for handouts and a
Social Studies Standards:
1. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the historical
development and current status of principles, institutions, and processes of the
political systems of the world's great kingdoms, empires, and states.
2. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the history,
diversity, and commonality of the peoples of the world, the reality of
interdependence , and the need for global cooperation.
3. The student will demonstrate an understanding of geographic concepts
and processes to examine the role of culture, technology, and the environment in
the location and distribution of human activities.
4. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the historical
development and current status of economic principles, institutions and
processes of world cultures throughout history to today.
5. The student will demonstrate competence in the methods social
scientists use to interpret political, social, and economic change.
Expectations for student:
To adhere to all SMR House Rules and to refrain from chewing gum in
class.
To adhere to the SMR Dress Code and the policy regarding electronics as
stated in the student/parent handbook.
To actively participate in group discussions and cooperative group
activities.
To complete assignments both in an out of class. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL
BE ACCEPTED except in the event of illness or other excused absence.
Assignments are due immediately upon return. Assignments will be updated daily
on the website, if
humanly possible.
To uphold the criteria established in the student/parent handbook on
attendance,
cheating, plagiarism, and internet use. To abide by the Honor Code in
all oral
and written work. Any
violation of the Honor Code will result in a zero with no
opportunity to makeup the work
in question.
To bring all required materials to class each day...be on time and
prepared
for discussions, quizzes, and activities.
To organize and keep all handouts/worksheets/quizzes for each unit IN
THE ORDER
IN WHICH THEY ARE RECEIVED in the required folder for end of unit assessments.
Evaluation and Grading
All assignments are due on the date specified. No late work
will be accepted unless the student is absent due to illness or
school-related activity. Assignments must be submitted on the first day back
from an absence. Not all homework will be collected
as it is assigned, but will be needed for class participation, quizzes, and
tests. Students absent for a test should expect to make up missed tests on the
day they return (except
extended illnesses of 3 or more days). In the case of the latter, arrangements
must
be made to make up the test IMMEDIATELY UPON RETURN.
Work missed as a result of tardiness, cuts, or suspension will receive a zero
and cannot be made up.
Grades by percentages approximately as follows:
Class participation/preparation for class 10%
Homework/classwork 20%
Quizzes/quests 30%
Tests (research projects, presentations and essays
count as test grades)
40%
FYI: Students requiring additional support should make individual
arrangements to
to work with me. I am available to work with students after school
most days,
during lunchtime, and during Social Studies Resource time during x-hour.
I make every effort to check my email three times each evening to
answer
student questions.
