Course Description: This course is an in-depth
study of the history of the human record from ancient through the
\medieval period.
The student will explore the rich tapestry of man's inventiveness through his
art, literature, and technological advances, as well as his economic and
political institutions and military achievements. The student will gain a
greater understanding of how the world and it peoples have come to be and what
and where they are today. Students will practice writing and research
skills, and interpret primary historical and literary sources. Students
are expected to do outside reading and long range projects.
Materials required: Text: Beck, World
History: Patterns of Interaction (blue cover edition)
Single subject spiral notebook for each quarter
3x5 cards
Colored pencils
2 Folders with pockets for handouts.
Social Studies Standards:
1. The student will demonstrate an understanding of
the historical development and current status of principles, institutions, and
processes of the political systems of the world's great kingdoms, empires, and
states.
2. The student will demonstrate an understanding
of the history, diversity, and commonality of the peoples of the world, the
reality of interdependence , and the need for global cooperation.
3. The student will demonstrate an understanding
of geographic concepts and processes to examine the role of culture, technology,
and the environment in the location and distribution of human activities.
4. The student will demonstrate an understanding
of the historical development and current status of economic principles,
institutions and processes of world cultures throughout history to today.
5. The student will demonstrate competence in the
methods social scientists use to interpret political, social, and economic
change.
Expectations for student:
To adhere to all SMR House Rules and to refrain
from chewing gum in class.
To adhere to the SMR Dress Code and Honor Code as
stated in the student/parent
handbook.
To actively participate in group discussions and
cooperative group activities.
To complete assignments both in an out of class>
NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE
ACCEPTED except in the event of
illness or other excused absence. Assignments
are due immediately upon
return.
To uphold the criteria established in the
student/parent handbook on attendance,
cheating, plagiarism, and
internet use. To abide by the Honor Code in all oral
and written work.
To complete writing assignments on time and according
to instructions for the type
of writing.
To bring all required materials to class each day...be
on time and be prepared
for discussions, quizzes, and
activities.
To organize and keep all handouts/worksheets/quizzes
for each unit IN ORDER
for end of unit
assessments.
Evaluation and Grading
All assignments are due on the
date specified. No late work will be accepted unless the student is absent
due to illness or school-related activity. Assignments must be submitted
on the first day back from an absence. Not all homework will be collected
as it is assigned, but will be needed for class participation, quizzes, and
tests. Students absent for a test should expect to make up missed tests on
the day they return (except
extended illnesses of 3 or more days). In the case of the latter,
arrangements must
be made to make up the test IMMEDIATELY UPON RETURN.
Work missed as a result of tardiness, cuts, or suspension will receive a zero
and cannot
be made up.
Grades by percentages approximately as follows:
Class participation/preparation for
class 10%
Homework/classwork 20%
Quizzes/quests
30%
Tests (projects, presentations,
essays) 40%
FYI: I will be available for academic tutorials
when students request it on most days
(caveat: unless another school
obligation takes priority)...and nightly
by email.
Students requiring additional support
should make individual arrangements
with me. It may also be possible to
schedule the student into the Social
Studies Resource period during the Xaverian/Enrichment
Hour.
