Summer Knights is celebrating its 6th summer season of providing athletic, academic and enrichment camps for students in grades 5-12. Learn more! Click on a topic below.

All of our camp staff, coaches and teachers are professionals in their fields. Summer Knights employs several college coaches and instructors, St. Mary’s Ryken staff members and leaders in the community to teach and manage our programs.
Camp Size: Academic classes have an average of 12:1 student to teacher ratio.
Lunch is available during select weeks for an additional fee. Lunch must be purchased at the time of registration. Lunch is provided by SAGE Dining Services.
Transporation is available during certain weeks but must be paid for at the time of registration. Price includes round trip for the week. Pick up locations are in Prince Frederick, Brandywine and Waldorf. Exact time and locations are TBD. An email will be sent prior to camp with pertinent information regarding times and locations.
Students are welcome to register for two camps during the same week if one is offered in the morning and the other in the afternoon (or vice versa). A 30-minute lunch break will be provided in-between the camps.

Athletic Camps

Game on! Summer Knights Athletic camps are coached by the best coaches and are sure to increase your young athlete’s skills and love of the game! Experience the Summer Knights difference though a number of different athletic camps. Hone your child’s current skill or try a new sport and discover passion for a new activity.

Volleyball

  • June 20-23. 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. 5th-9th grades. Fee: $150.
  • Bump! Set! Spike! Led by St. Mary’s Ryken Head Volleyball Coach Tracey Jubeck, this beginning volleyball camp emphasizes learning the basic skills of volleyball and aims for beginner athletes to gain confidence while developing passing, setting, hitting and serving skills. Come learn new skills, improve your current game and make new friends!

Sailing Camp

  • Space is limited. Beginning Sailing: June 20-24 and July 11-15. Intermediate Sailing: July 18-22. 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Ages 11-15. Fee: $200.
  • Our sailing camps are unlike any other camp! Come spend part of your summer on the water, while learning to sail and making new friends. This camp is led by St. Mary’s Ryken Sailing Coach, Joe Vavrus. Whether you’re a beginning sailor or an expert, we have a camp for you. Campers will learn terminology, safety and basic sailing techniques. Intermediate campers will continue to build on sailing skills. Experienced sailors and those who completed beginning sailing are encouraged to sign up for intermediate sailing. Spend a week of your summer enjoying the beauty of the water.

Boys Soccer

  • June 20-24. 8:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m. 6th-12th grades. Fee: $150.
  • This skills based boy’s soccer camp will emphasize specific soccer techniques each day, including dribbling, passing, shooting and defending. These skills will be demonstrated, taught and practiced using skill specific drills. Small sided and large games will be played each day to apply these skills in a competitive atmosphere. A summer long skills session is also available. Coached by St. Mary’s Ryken Soccer Coach JJ Raley.

Boys Lacrosse - New

  • June 27-30, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. 5th – 9th grades. Fee: $150.
  • St. Mary’s Ryken Knights lacrosse is about dedication, commitment and continuous improvement. This camp will provide the player with a positive experience ranging from learning basic skills to the most complex attributes for an experienced lacrosse player. We will provide a positive experience for players at all skill levels. There will be instruction for all positions from the SMR coaching staff, current players and current college lacrosse athletes. Please join us for a positive learning experience and learn from some of the best players in the area.

Girls Lacrosse Camp

  • July 6-8. 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. 5th-12th grades. Fee: $130.
  • This girls lacrosse camp will be unforgettable! Join St. Mary’s Ryken Head Girls Lacrosse coach, Kaylee McVerry for an intense lacrosse camp. Campers will work on stick skills, competitive game play and having a winning attitude!

Field Hockey

  • June 21-23. 9:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. 7th-12th grades. Fee: $125.
  • Are you ready to take your game to the next level? Come learn from our collegiate coaching staff at the Gold Standard Field Hockey camp at St. Mary’s Ryken. You can expect to learn more about the game you love, have a lot of fun, and gear up for the season ahead. Coached by Katie Fost. Coach Fost has been on the Gold Standard Performance staff since it’s inception. Fost currently is the assistant coach at Bates College.

Field Hockey Summer Skills

  • June 21-July 21. 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. 7th-12th grades. Fee: $75.
  • Join St. Mary’s Ryken Field Hockey Coach Tara Everly and spend the summer improving (or learning) your field hockey skills! Whether you’re new or a veteran to the game, join us twice a week for skills training and scrimmages.

Tennis

  • June 27-30. 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Ages 13-18. Fee: $100.
  • The tennis camp will focus on teaching basic and fundamental skills, techniques, and knowledge of tennis to novice beginners and on enhancing match skills/strategies and mental skills for more advanced players in a rigorous, education-based environment. Coached by St. Mary’s Ryken Head Tennis Coach and 2006 and 2014 SMAC Coach of the Year, Derek Sabedra.

Boys Basketball

  • June 27-30 | July 11-14 | July 18-21. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. 5th-9th grades. Fee: $175.
  • Join us on the courts for one, two or three weeks of basketball! This boy’s basketball camp will cover the basic fundamentals of basketball, including offensive play with and without the ball and on-ball and off-ball defense. Campers will have the opportunity to enhance their individual skills through specialized instruction. Campers will compete in various camp shooting and skills competitions. There will also be 1 on 1, 3 on 3, and 5 on 5 play. Campers should expect to leave this camp with an improved skill set, and enjoy a week of fun. Instruction will be provided from St. Mary’s Ryken Head Boys Basketball Coach, Patrick Behan.

Girls Basketball

  • June 20-24. 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. 5th-9th grades. Fee: $120.
  • This girls basketball camp will introduce the game of basketball to young players. We will provide campers with the opportunity to develop their basketball skills while offering an atmosphere that fosters cooperative learning and enthusiasm. Campers will participate in teaching stations as well as play games and utilize learned skills.

Creative Writing

  • June 20-24. 9 a.m.-12 p.m. 6th-9th grades. Fee: $100.
  • This weeklong session will venture into all aspects of the creative writing process: brainstorming, outlining, drafting and editing. Campers will explore all genres of writing from one’s imagination: short fiction, poetry and drama. This session is open to students who already write creatively or those who have never attempted it. The session will be fun, informative and memorable.

Stop Motion Animation

  • July 6-8. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. 8th-12th grades. Fee: $100.
  • Stop motion is an animation technique that gives a still image the impression of movement. In this camp, students will animate illustrations or create small sculptures. After creating the figure, it will be photographed, adjusted slightly, then photographed again. This process will repeat until the envisioned sequence is complete. Photographs will be viewed rapidly, creating the illusion of a moving cartoon.

Mixed Media

  • July 11-15. 9 a.m.-12 p.m. 6th-10th grades. Fee: $100
  • In this camp, students will create works of art by layering different mediums. While making images of their choice, students will develop artistic skills while also learning mixed media techniques. Students will create a collage as well as overlap paint, charcoal and pencil.

Watercolor

  • July 11-15. 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. 6th-10th grades. Fee: $100.
  • Students will learn various watercolor techniques that will help them paint anything from a pair of shoes to a famous landscape, as well as an object or photograph of their choosing.

Building Model Bridges Using the Engineering Process

  • July 18-22. 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. 6th-10th grades. Fee: $100.
  • Upon completion of this camp, the students will be able to: (1) identify the engineering principles behind bridge building; (2) identify different types of bridges; (3) become aware of a process outlining how bridges are designed and built; (4) understand some of the physics important for designing, building and using bridges (5) understand some of the preliminary events that takes place before construction, and finally (6) draw and build a bridge according to specification using the principles of engineering. The week will end with a Bridge Building Contest in which small teams of students compete to see which team's bridge holds the most weight before total collapse!

Oil Painting

  • July 18-22. 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. $100.
  • The oil painting camp is open to students in 6th – 12th grades. All experience levels are welcome. This camp offers students a chance to explore a media that is not often worked with until the college level. We will explore a new subject in oil painting everyday! We will be working on color theory projects, learning about oil painting through art history, and briefly covering how to paint figures and portraits. In addition to working in the studio, we will also be creating landscape paintings outside to capture the beautiful scenery surrounding the St. Mary’s Ryken campus. At the end of the week, family and friends are encouraged to join us for a fun exhibition highlighting the students artwork created throughout the week. The overall goal of this camp will be to have a great time and strengthen the student’s art skills and appreciation of art works.

Digital Photography

  • July 18-22. 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. 6th-10th grades. Fee: $100.
  • This camp is open to experience and novice photographers. Whether you've used a camera one time or are looking to add some pictures to your portfolio. This camp intends to make the novice photographer more comfortable using their camera, while givng the more experienced user time to practice and get feedback on their work. We will talk about the the cameras basic functions, settings and manual abilities. Students will learn technical terms and "rules" of photography.

Basic Cooking Class

  • July 18 - 22. 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. for 6th –12th grades. Fee: $125.00
  • Learn how to make dinner for your family, a friend or yourself! Using the professional kitchen at St. Mary’s Ryken, learn how to chop, whisk, peel and roast. We will make mashed potatoes, mac ’n cheese, home-made salad dressing, eggs and omelettes, pasta, a birthday cake and chocolate chip cookies.

Academic Camps

The Summer Knights Academic Programs are designed with your child’s academic needs in mind! Give your child a jump-start this summer with several of our summer programs designed to boost your child’s confidence and skill level in and out of the classroom.

SAT Prep

  • July 11-14 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. Fee: $295. Cost includes textbook and materials.
  • This class prepares students to be successful on the SAT exam. There will be special attention to test taking strategies and content-specific skills. Students will:
    • Review key skills and concepts in the content area
    • Learn tried and true test taking strategies. These will be enforced in every session
    • Learn proven techniques and tips to help them manage their test day experience
    • Be assigned practice tests after each class to be completed independently at home
    • Need to bring an SAT/ACT approved calculator and note-taking materials.

ACT Prep

  • July 15. 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. Fee: $100. Cost includes textbook and materials.
  • This add-on class prepares students to be successful on the ACT. Students enrolled in the SAT prep class and who are also planning on taking the ACT, should take this ACT specific prep course.

PSAT Prep

  • July 11-15. 10:15 - 11:45 a.m. Fee: $100.
  • In this PSAT prep class, students will learn skills necessary to be successful on the PSAT. Students will learn content-specific skills in addition to learning special test taking strategies. Students may take this course in combination with JumpStart Geometry or JumpStart Algebra II for a total fee of $150.

JumpStart Geometry

  • July 11-15. 8:30 - 10 a.m. Fee: $100. Cost includes textbook and materials.
  • This highly interactive class teaches students the basic concepts and skills needed to be successful in Geometry. Students taking this course are also encouraged to consider adding on the PSAT prep course.

JumpStart Algebra II

  • July 11-15. 8:30 - 10 a.m. Fee: $100.
  • This highly interactive class teaches students the basic concepts and skills needed to be successful in Algebra. Students taking this course are also encouraged to consider adding on the PSAT prep course.
