REQUIRED Materials: 3 Ring Binder with sections (math only) with pockets for handouts, TI-83 or higher Calculator, pencils (no pens)
Course Description
PREREQUISITES: 3111 and 3211. This course builds on the concepts introduced in Algebra I. Topics include: concepts and skills involving operations with real and imaginary numbers, simplifying polynomial and rational expressions, matrix algebra, solving linear, quadratic, exponential and logarithmic equations, and identify relations and functions. More advanced topics include an introduction to sequences, series and trigonometry.

Standard I: Identify different number sets.
Benchmarks:
The student will be able to:
Identify the set(s) to which a number belongs.
Provide examples of numbers from different sets; both real and complex.
Standard II: Develop an understanding and fundamental use of the 11 basic axioms.
Benchmarks:
The student will be able to:
Provide the axioms that justify the solution of an expanded algebraic expression.
Demonstrate the process of algebraic proofs.
Standard III: Perform fundamental operations on algebraic expressions, including complex numbers.
Benchmarks:
The student will be able to:
Develop problem solving techniques which include numbers from all of the number sets.
Deduce polynomials by degree and number of terms
Standard IV: Solve equations and inequalities: linear, quadratic, radical, radical, logarithmic, exponential and systems.

Induce that the same solution may result from different techniques.
Develop and process strategies and techniques for problem solving (factoring, linear combination, matrix algebra, and formulas).

Standard VI: Illustrate graphs of first and second-degree equations and inequalities in two variables, (conic and standard form) and exponential and logarithmic.

Graph equalities and inequalities and know their properties.
Graph lines conic sections, polynomial equations and their inequalities
Standard VII: Apply and relate mathematical techniques and solutions to real-life problems.

Analyze which techniques are best suited to solve a particular problem.
Apply algebraic techniques to real world problems (word problems).
Standard VIII: Utilize technology (graphing calculator) to aid in the understanding and finding the solutions to various types of equations.
Benchmarks:
The student will be able to:
Develop a working knowledge of technology available, especially the TI-83 or 84 calculators.
Once processes of solutions are understood manually, develop solution techniques using the calculator.
