UNIT 2 Defining Concert Music, Fanfare listening- September 11-24

Go to the musical examples on the Arts Appreciation web page to study the Fanfares for the listening portion of the test.  Be able to discuss the similarities and differences between them, particularly using the terms "introduction, theme, and transition music."

MAJOR PROJECT: Design a Listening Lesson (packet given in class)  DUE September 22- no late work

A detailed paper will be 1 1/2-2 pages.  Bring any required materials for your imaginary lesson (ie. specific books or CD's used in your lesson to turn in with your paper on Monday. 

1.   student name, class color  (typed, Times New Roman, 12 pt font, double spaced)

      Indicate a target age group (grades K-1, 2-4, 5-8, 9-12)   20 points

2.  List your goal for the lesson. (What do you want to the students to learn or be able to do by the end of the lesson?) 20 points

3.  Design and explain your activity in detail.  This must include ACTION between the teacher and students or between

     students and students. 20 points

4.  How will you present the activity to the class (will you demonstrate first, will you have them read aloud, etc.?)

     Basically, how will you get the class to perform the activity (actions?) 20 points

5.  How will you assess whether the class met your goal (did they learn what you wanted them to learn?) 20 points

HW due October 10- Write your name and class color on a piece of paper.  1. write a metronome marking at the top left hand corner 2. write either 3 4 time or 4 4 time (these are written on top of each other)  3. write four measure of rhythm in your  time signature using whole notes (if you choose 4 4) half notes, quarter, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes.  Be sure to use at least one of every kind at some point in your four measures.

Unit 7 the final elements of art, space and color

Art hand-out on space and color- lots of terms to learn, particularly methods of spacial projection and differences between Western art and art from around the world

You need to know "The Staircase Group" painting by Peale and the story of how and where it was displayed, and who it fooled.

You need to know the differences between the spectrum and the color wheel.

Unit 8  The Final Elements of Music (Dynamics and Timbre)- plus orchestral instruments, composing music, orchestrating music

NOTE: Most of the final exam will come from this unit along with the basic elements of art

Music hand-out, Dynamics and Timbre- know the dynamics from your sheet IN ORDER from loudest to softest...be able to list the Italian translation, symbol and English for each dynamic level.

POWERPOINT PROJECT- choose an orchestral musician or conductor (not a composer)- create a powerpoint presentation- click here for instructions   DUE May 20th- computer problems will not be accepted as an excuse

HW, due May 15- go to www.nyphilkids.org- click composition workshop (print out that page to turn in) then click orchestration station- create your own orchestration by selecting which instruments will play which parts- copy down your instrument choices on the back of your printed composition workshop paper so we can play them in class- don't forget to put your name and class color on it

HW- due May 29th- go to the Ryken library and compose 8 measures of music using the Groovy City Music Software- be sure to save your work with your first and last name and the letter G B or W for your class color (ex. Janis Paulson G)- it is installed on the last four computers by the copy room
