Mrs. Nancy Riester has been a model teacher in and out of the classroom at St. Mary’s Ryken for 10 years. As a math teacher, she is an integral part of the school community. She has a passion for math and transfers that passion on to her students, recently adding Advanced Placement Calculus to her list. She’s so committed that she even stays after school every day tutoring students, most which are not enrolled in her class. Following her tutoring sessions, one will find her – or more probably hear her - at any SMR athletic event taking place that day!
Mrs. Riester has been the moderator of a very strong and active Student Government Association. Under her guidance, a group of 30+ students organize school dances, senior citizen proms, Thanksgiving baskets, Children’s Christmas, student spirit events that keep the SMR community alive and much more. She participates in retreat programs and is very involved in her local parish. She also established a faith-based leadership retreat for the students involved in student government at SMR.
Everyone adores Mrs. Riester! So many students return from college seeking her out to let her know how well they are doing, because they know it matters to her and she will celebrate in their joy. She always has a smile and a good word for the students.
Mrs. Riester received her BS degree in Physics from Mary Washington College. She has lived in St. Mary’s County for 10years with her husband Pete. She has 2 children… Mrs. Riester received the XBSS Teacher of the Year Award in 2005.
