Janis Potter Paulson

During her time in New York she worked with many modern dance companies throughout New York City and was an accompanist for Paul Taylor and Martha Graham technique classes. She was a dance finalist for the Broadway show “Stomp” where her tap dancing experience was noted. After college she toured the U.S. as a marimba soloist and guest clinician for the Adams/Pearl Drum companies. She then joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band as a percussionist and also continued her solo career… appearing as a guest soloist at four International Percussive Arts Society Conventions, producing two solo CD’s and publishing numerous articles for Percussive Notes Magazine. After her daughter was born in 2004, Mrs. Paulson decided to make the change to full-time educator; she is on the adjunct faculty of George Washington University, keeps a very busy private piano, voice, and percussion studio, and is beginning work on her Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership.
At St. Mary’s Ryken High School, Mrs. Paulson teaches Chorus, Dance and Arts Appreciation. She utilizes a great deal of technology to give the students the most up-to-date arts education. She encourages students to create their own works including modern compositions, choreography and fine art, and she looks forward to many upcoming performances. Please check the SMRHS fine arts link often to see a list of performances available to the public.
