Wrap Up Activity/Test

Wrap Up Activity/Test

The second quarter extends from October 27 to two weeks after Christmas Break.

During this quarter, you will read two full length works and we will also begin serious practicing with AP-style multiple choice and essay questions.  After reviewing last quarter, I have decided to make the following choices:

  1. You will complete only six Outlooks this quarter.  They must be from six different weeks, but you will turn in ALL SIX Outlooks at the same time.  They are due to me before you leave for Christmas break. Please make a cover page that lists MLA style citations for all of the articles you included.  6 x 20 = 120 + 30 pts for the correct cover page.  Do not even think about e-mailing this assignment to me.  After Christmas, we will be adding an additional element to the Outlooks, which will be required for third quarter.  (More information about that later…)
  2. Over the Christmas Break, you will read EITHER Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt or All Over But the Shoutin’ by Rick Bragg.  NB: The movie of the McCourt book doesn’t even come close to covering all of the book.  Also, I am telling you now (in October) about the reading assignment so you COULD read the book between Thanksgiving and Christmas and then take two weeks off from AP Language work over the break.  You will take a test on your selected book when you come back from break and then you will write a paper comparing the book you chose with the Walls book you read over the summer.
  3. After Christmas, you will need a copy of the Kaplan Test Prep guide for AP Language and Composition 2009.  I will show you examples of the book – please make sure you get the AP Language book and NOT the AP Lit book.

PLEASE REMEMBER: Your entire Banned Book Project is due on November 3.  I will give you 10 bonus points for a typed & beautiful introduction (1 paragraph) and table of contents. This is a huge grade – we will be going to the library again this week so you can do your last bits of research and complete some writing.  Presentations will be made in an order decided on Monday, 11/3.  I expect the presentations to last about three or four class periods.  You will be evaluating your peers while they present their projects.

Banned Book Project

Grading Components

MRP (6 genres)                                                 120

Literature Log                                                    20

Annotated Bibliography                                   20

Research Log/Project Journal                          20

Presentation                                                       40

+10 points available for providing a detailed introduction (1 page) and a table of contents.

Literature Log Format

Your literature must be limited to a single typed page and should conform to the formatting indicated here. There is no need to replicate the section headings, but your sections should be in the following order:

1.       Book title

2.       Author

3.       Number of pages

4.       MLA format bibliography entry

5.       Summary

6.       Detailed analysis of at least two literary elements (characters, plot, setting, conflict, point of view)

7.       Your “review,” including who might enjoy this book (especially if you didn’t)

8.       Number of “stars” (1-5)

Research Log

While doing your research project, please track your “steps” in a research log.  When you have finished, type it up and turn it in (10 entries.)

Example:

9/22                       Online research – searched COSMOS and found two pieces of literary criticism and one                                                 book review from 1876.  Printed, read, and annotated all three pieces.

Presentation

You must create an interesting, entertaining 3-5 minute presentation wherein you showcase your book, its history and your project.
